Westerville Ammunitions Mfg Site Goes to Horses

Posted by prettysleepy on August 12, 2008

In 1962 the United States Department of Defense donated  111 acres of land to the City of Westerville. It has been abandoned for years. During World War II, Kilgore Manufacturing Co was one of only three plants for incendiary bombs during World War II.

From the Columbus Dispatch: “The company made the ammunitions that then-Lt. Col. Jimmy Dolittle used for air strikes over Japan in 1942,” attorney Ron Kuis said. “The company remained in business through the Korean War and later filed for bankruptcy,” Kuis said.

During the summer of 2007, Otterbein had planned to clean up the site and sell it to a homebuilder. Neighbors worried that removing dirt from the site could stir up unhealthy chemicals and the plan was trashed. Now everyone is happy because the vacant 111-acre site will be used for Otterbein College’s Equine Center. They plan horse barns, grazing land and riding areas for Otterbein College students. The new center will cost $3 million. 63 years after the war ended, 31 acres on the site remain contaminated and need to be cleaned up. These 31 acres will be fenced in for safety. The school can  begin using the remaining land right away. read more. . .

Middle & Highschool Built on Chemical Waste Dump

Posted by prettysleepy on August 12, 2008

Ohio’s River Valley Middle and High Schools were built in the 1960’s on the site of a former military complex (and POW camp during WWII). The now abandoned buildings sit right on the spot where chemical waste was dumped for years. Both schools were closed in 2003 due to high rates of Leukemia cases among former students who attended these schools. An investigation of the contamination and school leukemia cases began in 1997 (see article below). It sounds like a I bad location to build a school, doesn’t it?

The schools still stand and can be viewed from the road. Concrete barriers with “No Trespassing” signs have been placed to block all of the entrances. The grounds are now used to store mulch.  I drove past recently and saw the huge stacks of mulch. I’m wondering if that is a good idea. According to some reports as many as 75 different chemicals were found at hazardous levels around the school including arsenic. You know, I’m not even sure it would be safe to store mulch there. Who would want to buy it? Unless you were planning on mulching for someone you really disliked. “Oh, yes. I’ll help you mulch. I know just the place to buy it. . .”

Gamefly’s Advertisements

Posted by prettysleepy on July 17, 2008

Months ago, I wrote a positive article about Gamefly. I am now reconsidering. Today I went to their site with my son to choose new games. First, I was disgusted by the advertisements on their website. Second, my child wanted to watch a game trailer and it began playing a hidious preview for a Mature rated game called “Shutter”. It is impossible to watch the game trailers without being subjected to these gross previews. Update: I have posted their very nice and positive response to this problem below.

I sent Gamefly the following complaint:

I am a long time member and am considering canceling my account for this reason. As a mother of two children, I am disappointed with the graphic advertisements on your website. I can’t even watch the game trailers with my kids because the previews before them are sometimes horrifying (shutter for example). My children like to go on Gamefly and pick out their games, but this is not possible because the advertisement pictures have BLOOD and GRAPHIC IMAGES. After this month I will be canceling if this is not corrected.

UPDATE  I’m satisfied with Gamefly’s response on this matter. Here it is:

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding our recent advertising campaign. While we screen the advertisements before they appear on the site, we do understand your desire to shield your children from inappropriate content. We will evaluate future advertisements with your concerns in mind.

If you would like your account to present GameFly Advertisements only, you can use GameFly’s Parental Controls. To activate this feature, please visit the “My Account” link, http://www.gamefly.com/member/account.asp, and select “Parental Controls”. By adjusting the game and UMD movie ratings, the only ads displayed will be ones promoting the GameFly service.

We would like to thank you again for bringing this to our attention in a thoughtful manner. Feel free to contact me if you have any further issues or concerns.

Sincerely,

Terri - Vice President

Sharon Stone has said the earthquake in China is karma. It might be a VERY good idea for her to never go to China, FOR ANYTHING.

Sharon Stone: … “Well you know it was very interesting because at first, you know, I am not happy about the ways the Chinese were treating the Tibetans because I don’t think anyone should be unkind to anyone else. And so I have been very concerned about how to think and what to do about that because I don’t like THAT. And I had been this, you know, concerned about, oh how should we deal with the Olympics because they are not being nice to the Dalai Lama, who is a good friend of mine. And all these earthquake and all this stuff happened and I thought: IS THAT KARMA? When you are not nice that bad things happen to you. And then I got a letter, from the Tibetan Foundations that they want to go and be helpful. And that made me cry. And they ask me if I would write a quote about that and I said, “I would.” And it was a big lesson to me, that some times you have to learn to put your head down and be of service even to people who are not nice to you. And that’s a big lesson for me.”

2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van 17 MPG

Posted by prettysleepy on May 22, 2008

We have a full size Dodge Ram 1500 Van and have calculated the gas mileage several times. It is 17 mpg every time. On the window sticker it says 14 mpg in town and 16 mpg highway. I think this is awesome for such a HUGE vehicle. Still, it costs us over $100 to fill it up every-other-week. I never imagined I’d pay so much for gas. I’m ready for an electric car, but no way am I giving up my van.

Creepy Occurrences: Poltergeist Movie

Posted by prettysleepy on April 19, 2008

There were some strange occurrences reported by Jo Beth Williams during the filming of the Poltergeist movies. She said that in the evenings when she went home the lights were on when she was SURE she had turned them off. It creeped her out. Four people who worked on the movies have passed away, as well. My source for this information is the show: “E! True Hollywood Story, Curse of Poltergeist (2002)” It was very interesting and creepy, too! But I couldn’t tear myself away. . .I had to watch it. . .

One of the comments on the IMDB expresses my feelings on this special perfectly: “I don’t know which is scarier the Poltergeist Movies or this documentary E! made about them. This Documentary will shake you up a little bit, as E! talks about all the freakish events that took place during each of the three Poltergeist films including one very horrific event that took place during Poltergeist II involving the bodies that were brought in as props. Everyone on set was told they were fake, Craig T. Nelson discovered that these bodies were real. The stage hands got the props mixed up and got a cargo of real bodies.”

1982: Dominique Dunn died at age 22 when her ex-boyfriend turned stalker killed her just outside her home. It was such a sad story. She was with a guy who was reportedly scared and didn’t go out to help her. This guy who didn’t help was one of her costars from the show she was working on called “V”. read more. . .

1985: Julian Beck who played the ‘bad spirit’ in Poltergeist II, died of stomach cancer.

1987: Will Sampson who played the ‘good spirit’ in Poltergeist II, died after receiving a heart-lung transplant.

1988: Heather O’Rourke, the young girl in all three movies. She died of a septic infection

New Female Gladiator, Erin Toughill, for Season 2

Posted by prettysleepy on March 25, 2008

erin1.jpgerintoughill02_big.jpgerin_status_pic.jpg

Rumors are flying that there is a new female gladiator for season 2. Her name is Erin Toughill and she is a MMA star ( mixed martial artist) and boxer.  I’ve read that Erin, 30, has been picked up to be a gladiator on season two of the “American Gladiators.”  She says she originally got into martial arts “so that I could have a positive outlet for my aggression”. Good thinking! Toughill made her professional boxing debut in July 2000. Click here to see her official website. Does anyone think Crush has some competition as the ‘prettiest’ female gladiator, if this rumor is true? In an interview with Titan, he admitted thinking that Crush was the sexiest lady gladiator. There is no mention of this deal on her website. I’d think there would be. I’d put it on MY website if I was going to be a gladiator. I might even rent out a few billboards around town. Does this mean that one of the current female gladiators left?

Monica Carlson is Jet, American Gladiator
